In 1978, Ron Hyatt was a special education teacher who, like many people, dreamed of some day becoming an actor. One day, Ron's girlfriend sent a nude photo of him on a whim to Playgirl magazine, who published it as part of their "Boy Next Door" feature; before long, Ron was asked to appear in a hardcore pornographic movie, and thus was the beginning of the career of Ron Jeremy, one of biggest and least-likely male stars in the adult film industry. Short, pudgy, and possessing an excess of body hair, Jeremy hardly looks like anyone's idea of a sex-show stud, but Jeremy's charm, intelligence, self-effacing good humor, and professional attitude in a business where such focus is rare made him the best-known man in porn, starring in literally hundreds of adult films and eventually breaking through to bit parts and cameo roles in mainstream features. Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy is a feature- length documentary that offers an inside look at Ron Jeremy's life and career, including interviews with his friends, co-workers, and family; the film won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2001 No Dance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Years ago, the documentary "Wadd" (dramatized in the film "Wonderland" starring Val Kilmer) told the sad true story of porn star John C. Holmes, a sociopathic cocaine addict who associated with criminals and earned the hatred of all who knew him. "The Legend of Ron Jeremy" provides a 180-degree counterpoint to "Wadd" which makes it even more fascinating: A nice Jewish boy from a nice family (His father was a physicist and his mother was in the CIA!) who never did drugs, made no enemies and works hard (no pun intended) into middle age to maintain a livelihood as a porn star. Because Ron Jeremy is a lovable regular guy who could be your brother, your best friend or your college roommate, the journey into his profession and psyche as a porn star makes for an outstanding documentary with an impact comparable to that of "Crumb."

Strong Sexual Content, but not really porn... But it really seems to be a documentary done with too much porno asthetic. Ron Jeremy Hyatt is an interesting character, and the story of his life, how he got into porn, how he has defined porn, and how porn has defined him, is a very interesting topic. It would be a better movie, with less random sex. It would be a better movie if there were more intense sex that was particular to Ron. It would be a better movie if the timeline was more clear. Boogie Nights is a better movie about the Porn industry than this one was. This should have been a better movie than it was. Yet still, 3 stars for being an interesting topic.

I got the impression the documentary was filmed over too short a time period. Ron is a good, honest guy, and at least that comes out. I hope he fulfills his dream of going "mainstream.." But he's a good guy and a great performer at that. Doing movies like "Toxic Avenger VI" or whatever won't do much for him, so I am unsure why he bothers.
