Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie (2002)

Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie (2002)
Member Rating:
Based on the Japanese animated series of the same name, Revolutionary Girl Utena involves the plight of Utena into womanhood through fighting techniques and other physical drama. Sexual tension arises between Utena -- the girl who wants to become a prince -- and her friend Anthy, whose character is a more extroverted version of the way she appears in the series. Surreal and moody, the film depicts the strange entanglements of characters Tonga, Akio, and others, and its dream-like ending exceeds any comprehensible expectations. For the American version, English dubbing was supervised by the film's original director. ~ Sarah Sloboda, Rovi

This movie was great. The way it was drawn, movement, scenes... Utena is new at this school. She ends up receiving a ring representing her as a candidate for the Rose Princess. The Rose Princess is special for the power she is able to bestow on anyone who wins her as a price in these matches. Utena becomes her prince. There are many situations involved with the different characters which are all connected in one or another. This movie is for mature audiences. The ending seems a little odd, but is understandable. Though it was left for everyone to interpret it in their own way. Although not exciting, it is a very well put and interesting movie. Good for those who like to watch and enjoy while being drawn into the story (as an on-looker of course), who like to think at the same time as well. I liked it.

I found the movie enjoyable as long as I tried not to figure out what was going on. Perhaps I should have seen the series first. Just as I thought I had the general premise figured out, then the story would throw in a plot twist right on top of another. I gave up trying to understand and just enjoyed the style which was rich and thought provoking. To quote my brother who watched it with me. "I was lost until she turned into a car."

I didn't really know what the heck was going on in this movie until the last 30 minutes, that is when the parts start to click. It wasn't until days later that I came close to fully understanding all the pieces and how they fit. If you enjoy movies like Pink Floyd's : The Wall then this is the movie for you. The whole movie about the inner working a mentalyl disturbed girl, whether she is catatonic or not is beyond me. All I know is the characters are symbols of life of the Rose Queen. If that's your type of movie, then watch this movie. In fact watch it twice.
