Synopsis of The Real West

Gary Cooper narrates this documentary that looks past the heroic stereotypes of the Western frontier to present a realistic portrait of the hardships and grim realities of life in the West in the 1880s. Vintage photographs and eyewitness accounts are combined with historical re-enactments to create what the New York World described as "the truest picture of the Real West any medium has ever shown." The Real West was produced as part of the NBC documentary series Project Twenty, and first aired in 1960. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
