This is for those who love acting over spectacle. There really isn't a weak spot in the cast (Julia as Edmund was a great surprise), but the scene between Lear (Jones) and the blinded Gloucester (Sorvino) will really blow your mind. I was surprised also by the decent technical achievement (given that it was recorded live in Central Park in 1974), sound very good and lighting adequate. The language is very clearly heard--a paramount concern in a performance of Shakespeare.

I remember seeing this on TV, probably PBS, back in the mid-70's when I was a teen. The performances were so powerful that I remembered it immediately when I saw this DVD. It is just as powerful and magnificent as I remembered. The production values are amazingly good for the technology available then. If you want to watch a performance of King Lear to understand the play, I highly recommend this one.
