Knife in the Water (1962)

Was never quite sure where "Knife in the Water" was headed, but I think that's what Polanski intended -- that we allow ourselves to be carried along, as if directed by the wind in the sails, or much as the hitchhiker might never know where a ride would leave him. There is a voyeuristic feel to this interesting film, as if we -- as well as the mysterious hitchhiker -- have a private eye into the life of the married couple. The boat's close quarters, the fact that all three spend the night down below, and the brief nudity help to develop that feeling. Moody and ominous, the film takes much of its cue from the cloudcast sky and brief rainshowers; the jazz music adds to the effect and to the increasing sense of watery isolation. Polanski coaxed fine performances from a complete ingenue and an actor with just a bit more experience. Interestingly, that's Polanski's voice dubbed over the young man's. Polanski's bonus interview, as well as his short films on Disk 2, are also captivating.

Well, now I know why Polanski is Polanski!! Will have to watch more of his films. The film kept me on the edge of my seat... the suspense. The utter surprise to see the young man swimming beautifully, then to see the older man waiting on land for his sailboat to arrived manned by his wife. At the end... the way the car just sat at the intersection... wow! Why did the young man lie about his swimming skills? Was the older man jealous? Is that why he tossed the knife in the water?

Classic Polanski. Something no one should miss out. Though not much goes on, it is worth enjoying.
