Kingdom of the Spiders (1977)

Kingdom of the Spiders (1977)
Member Rating:
In Kingdom of the Spiders a swarm of huge tarantulas, enraged by the misuse of pesticides, try to take over their part of the world. Dr. Robert Hansen (William Shatner), a local Arizona veterinarian joins forces with entomologist Diane Ashley (Tiffany Bolling) to keep the spider population under control. Woody Strode and Altovise Davis also appear as the owners of a neighboring ranch. Unstylishly directed by John Cardos and produced with a sense of humor by "Arachnid Productions," -- and despite bad dialogue, wooden acting and poor special effects -- Kingdom of the Spiders has become a cult classic and favorite of several generations of giant insect horror film buffs. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

I foundly remember this movie from my childhood and as an adult was still entertained. The eco-message was clear enough and still relevant. The story is campy, but a lot of fun. If you are looking for a serious flick, go elsewhere, if you want (unintentional) camp, rent it. Go spiders!

The 70s saw a host of eco-horror, nature-gone-wild-to-punish-mankind movies, and this is one of my favorites. It's not a good movie. There's nothing special about the cinematography, special effects, acting, or script. Still I can't help but admire the sheer chutzpah of a film predicated on the idea that tarantulas get super-venomous and start eating cows and people because DDT has been used kill crop pests.
