The Voyage of La Amistad: A Quest for Freedom (1998)

The Voyage of La Amistad: A Quest for Freedom (1998)
Member Rating:
The true story of the revolt and subsequent trial of escaped African slaves is documented in The Voyage of La Amistad: A Quest for Freedom. When a group of men and women were kidnapped from the coast of Sierra Leone in 1839, they had no idea what to expect. Conditions aboard the slave ship were beyond belief, with rows of people stacked together and inadequate food and water. Now referred to as the "middle passage," the voyage was often deadly and always inhumane. When the Africans were eventually brought up on charges of piracy and murder, the trial focused on the nature of slavery itself. Alfre Woodard narrates the description of this historic debate. ~ Sarah Ing, Rovi

I had never heard of La Amistad until a visiting preacher mentioned the Spielberg movie it in my church. I watched the Spielburg movie "Amistad" last night, and this movie tonight. The Spielburg movie was good, entertaining, typical Hollywood movie fare. This DVD feels EXACTLY like a PBS documentary. This movie never mentioned the Spielberg movie, but it was an excellent complement. It gave some extra details that Spielberg left out. And it validated some things that were part of Spielberg's story that I thought he had just made up to make a good movie. Watching this DVD taught me more about the Amistad events than Spielburg could, and it was an excellent complement to the Spielburg version of the story.
