The Atomic Cafe (1982)

The Atomic Cafe (1982)
Member Rating:
The Atomic Cafe is a sometimes hilarious, sometimes sobering collection of film clips taken from American propaganda films of the 1950s. The thrust of the production is to expose the misinformation (and downright lies) dispensed by the government concerning the atomic bomb. We are shown vignettes from such classic instructional films as Duck and Cover, wherein school children are assured that they will survive a nuclear attack simply by huddling together next to the schoolhouse wall. In another sequence, a pack of pigs are dressed in Army uniforms and left to die at "Ground Zero" during a nuclear test to see if human beings (who purportedly have the same skin consistency as pigs) could endure such an ordeal. Fascinating though it is, Atomic Cafe makes its basic point early in the proceedings, then tends to repeat that point over and over rather than expand upon it. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This funny movie (gotta love the Army Chaplin describing the glory of God's New Armament) is very dark in a lot of ways, as the film is a collage if newsreel and training films for both military and public consumption. I even remember having to do the duck and cover in the 60's...ah memories! My high school nephew learned alot and asked a lot of questions about this movie, so his dad gave him a lot of background. While this is an often comical film in some of the quaint understandings that even makers did not fully understand, it is frightening knowing that this mindset still exists. Just an amazing look at history.

This movie was really good a collection of old propaganda films, and how lightly the American public took the whole atomic bomb incident. There is no voice over on this entire movie, because all the actual footage speaks completely for itself. I think this is a great film to introduce WWII in the classroom, but definitely anybody interested in unbias docs!

The movie is hilarious. Maybe 50 years later someone can make a film about the the ridiculous but more subtle American propaganda of today.
