This is a wordy and overly dramatic rendition of this book. (note: I am judging the movie on it's own terms, not in comparison to the book). The main character Jude is likeable, but pathetic. The women are barely tolerable. Shallow and self-serving, stupid and immoral. I rented the 2nd CD hoping for some interesting changes in plot, but it seems to be a continuation of unsatisfying love relationships and a drawn out theme of difficulty with societal and religious views of marriage. (Living together vs being married). Since it's not rated, I'll note that there is nudity in this movie and a large focus on sexuality. If you've seen all the BBC movies and mini series, you may find some enjoyment with this series, but I cannot think of a BBC production I enjoyed less.

The actors take their roles over the top: too angry, too much grimacing while weeping, too much overacting. Their grandiose, loud interpretations of their roles are meant for the stage, not the cinema.
