Robert Duvall dons tartan and a thick brogue to star as Gordon McLeod, the manager of a failing Scottish football club. The second-division club -- dubbed Kilnockie after the fishing town it calls home -- has a new owner, an American named Pete Cameron (Michael Keaton), who pressures McLeod to spruce up the faltering club and, against McLeod's wishes, hires first-division star Jackie McQuillan (real-life footy luminary Ally McCoist). McQuillan's past days of glory came with a price, as his flashy lifestyle and volatile temperament cost him both his career and wife Kate (Kirsty Mitchell), who is none other than McLeod's own daughter. In the tradition of sports dramas from Hoosiers to Major League, A Shot at Glory sees the rag-tag team -- which also includes a talented American goalkeeper (Cole Hauser) -- put aside their differences for the love of the game, ultimately leading Kilnockie to a climactic match against the legendary Glasgow Rangers . ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi

I rented this because of Duval and Scotland (ya gotta love em both) and was not dissapointed. Its the old underdog premise that's been done so many times but I caught myself cheering towards the end anyway. Gorgeous scenery, tantalizing score by Mark Knopfler and Duval's realistic brogue contribute to a solid cast and tight direction. Is there anything this man cant do on the screen? Move over Hopkins Penn. For my movie dollar, Duval is simply the best going today.

Quite a surprise hearing Duvall in a Scottish brogue. Michael Keaton as second fiddle is a suprise and not one of Keatons best outtings. The scenery is especially dramatic. The cursing and sex situations do not improve this quiet hit. This affirms my opinion of Robert Duvall as being one of the finish actors in the cinema for all times.

A hidden gem. I had never even heard of this Duvall movie! Surprisingly good. A lot of unneeded profanity knocks it down a notch - definitely not for children. But a great storyline and quality sports action and cinematography. Well worth viewing.
