Synopsis of Sa Gar Ett Ar; Teden I Sjobo

The complex nature of Scandanavian attitudes towards non-Scandanavian immigrants (particularly political asylum-seekers) is the focus of this controversial film. This long Swedish documentary (3 hours) explores the furor in Sjobo, a little town near Malmo, when it is announced that 15 refugees (possibly from Arab countries) are slated to be relocated there. The beginning of the documentary explores the town's social fabric without reference to the refugee question. It appears to be a warm and welcoming place. Then the refugee question is addressed, and the previous warmth disappears, with one local political figure musing that, if such resettlements continue to be allowed, it's likely that future generations of Swedes will not have blond hair or blue eyes. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
