Member Rating:
A satire of comic-book superheroes in the same vein as the 1999 Mystery Men, The Specials is set in a parallel universe where gangs of superheroes regularly compete against one another for glory or, failing that, flattering action-figure likenesses. The Specials are one of these gangs, and not a very good one at that. Composed of the Weevil (Rob Lowe), the group's most popular member, Amok (Jamie Kennedy), a potty-mouthed shape-shifter, group leader Strobe (Thomas Haden Church), and the constantly growing or shrinking Minute Man (James Gunn), the Specials are more concerned with their image than in actually doing anything heroic. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi

What does the world's eighth-greatest superhero group do on its day off? They bicker, they hit on girls, and launch their new line of action figures. They don't fight any bad guys (as the opening sequence notes, "this is not one of those days") but the infighting and politics inside a third-rate super group provide a long overdue and entertaining parody of the whole superhero genre. Some of the satire may go over the heads of those looking for "a real action movie," but then again you shouldn't rent Monty Python's Holy Grail if you want to see authentic medieval warfare. The casting is excellent and the dialog is offbeat and delivered with a deadpan earnestness that raises the silliness to another level. And you have to check out the deleted scenes, which has a couple gems as well.

This is a very cute take on a superhero movie. If you are looking for action and adventure, this is not the movie you want. If you want a light hearted silly soap opera style comedy about a bunch of people who take themselves too seriously, you'll enjoy this one. If you go into this movie with high expectations, you'll be dissappointed; this is a "chill out and enjoy" movie.

Campy. Could have been better. But not for children. Adults should get a few laughs.
