In Search of the Castaways (1962)
Member Rating:
Based on Jules Verne's novel Captain Grant's Children, In Search of the Castaways stars Hayley Mills and Keith Hamshere as the children of long-missing ship's captain Jack Gwillim. By chance, a note stuffed in a bottle comes to the attention of the kids and professor Maurice Chevalier; the note contains the fragment of a map, which suggests that Gwillim is somewhere in South America. Only after enduring a series of life-threatening adventures do Chevalier and the kids discover that they should have been in New Zealand all along! Once they're finally in the correct corner of the world, our protagonists are bedeviled by gunrunner George Sanders, the fellow who'd set the captain adrift. With the help of Wilfrid Brambell, a looney ex-crew member of the captain's (and the fellow who sent the bottled message), Chevalier, Mills and Hamshere are finally reunited with Gwillim--and as a bonus, Mills has found a boy friend, played by Michael Anderson. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Disney Studios in the 60's was on the cutting edge of special effects. Hard to beleive when you compare the effects of this movie with CG effects of today. Yet even limited to blue screen, rear projection and miniatures the film is a fascinating study in how things had to be done in those days. The film itself is utterly campy and filled with goofy songs but that only adds to its charm. I would recommend that parents rent the movie and then check out the book by Jules Verne from the local library. It is adventure at its finest. Earthquakes, floods, ice cave flume rides, volcanoes, water spouts, and world travel. What more could any "child at heart" ask for?

I rented this movie as recommended with another Pirate "type" movie. Disney's love of geography and nature show with a South American trek through the Andes and a jaguar. Plus volcanoes and all kinds of fun. I really enjoyed it and recommend it! The characters are well played but a little campy in the Disney tradition. Good clean fun!

Campy, Cute, Entertaining Fun for the whole family... Hayley Mills and Maurice Chevalier! What more can you ask for in this fun-filled, live-action Disney movie of yesteryear!! OK...Yes, it is a bit corny but who cares! Just sit down, relax and enjoy!
