Lady Audley's Secret (2000)
Member Rating:
Filmed several times during the silent era (most notably as a 1915 vehicle for Theda Bara), Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Victorian sensation novel Lady Audley's Secret was revamped as a British TV movie in 2000. Neve McIntosh heads the cast as Lucy, a mysterious woman with a shady past who manages to inveigle a proposal of marriage from her wealthy and aristocratic employer Sir Michael Audley (Kenneth Cranham). Upon his return to England after several years of prospecting for gold, Sir Michael's nephew, Robert (Steve Mackintosh), is immediately smitten by his glamorous young aunt. Equally impressed is Robert's scoundrelly mining partner, George (Jamie Bamber), who apparently knows the whole sordid truth about Lady Audley's past. The plot thickens when the blackmail-minded George abruptly disappears. Lady Audley's Secret was first telecast in the U.K. on May 17, 2000, several weeks after its March 23, 2000, world premiere on the American PBS anthology Mystery! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

If you're a period piece junkie, like my girlfriend, you should check this out. It's well made, watchable, and well acted, but oh, haven't we seen it all before? Quite predictable, but it's like an action film where the star takes on the Russian mob. You don't care if it's been done to death before if the action is good. This movie delivers the required ambiance and pathos, just really predictable.

I thought it was a good movie. I wouldn't buy it, but liked the plot and storyline. It kept me watching it till the end. I wanted to know how it turned out and what happened. It is a mystery, and I love those; but this has great acting and scenery, too. A good way to spend a weekend afternoon.

As most english films, this one was first rate..superb acting on all fronts..the only weak spot was the film's intention to make you believe that Mme Audley's first husband died in the well..and hence the momentous climax when he's alive at the end..other than that the acting and script was as authentic for the period one could get..well done on all counts..4 stars!!
