Synopsis of Varian Fry: Artists' Schindler

Amidst the horrors of the Third Reich, some men and women found astonishing and courageous ways to fight back -- this is one of those stories. Varian Fry was a young editor from New York when, in 1940, he traveled to Marseilles as part of an American relief effort. Once there, Fry risked his life to set up an intricate rescue network that -- through illegal means and in defiance of French and some American authorities -- shuttled refugees out of occupied France toward Portugal, North Africa, and the United States. Among the thousands of lives he saved were some of Europe's leading artists and intellectuals: Max Ernst, Marc Chagall, Andre Breton, Alma Mahler, Andre Masson, and Marcel Duchamp. In Varian Fry: The Artists' Schindler, this incredible and inspiring story is reconstructed using Fry's own memoirs, archival footage, and personal interviews. ~ Sarah Welsh, All Movie Guide
