As usual, Gerard Depardieu was flawless. The entire cast was superb! The movie was brilliant, from the wardrobe to the scenery, and did an excellent job depicting the class conflict that led to the French Revolution. The movie had it's sad elements, as do most French movies. The underlying theme of personal integrity to one's ideals, and the importance of personal freedom lead the viewer to feel the hope of human progress and development and help us to better understand, again, the motivations that gave rise to the overthrow of the French aristocracy. I highly recommend this movie!

To me this movie is a work of art. It is about a man that is a perfectionist and the crafting of this movie was also done by perfectonists. I was so impressed by it that I am having difficulty finding the words to describe my thoughts about this film. But, if one wants to see all of the components of movie making come together in what I believe is a near masterpiece, then this movie is a must see. The attention to detail in set decoration, costuming, direction, editing and every other aspect of movie making is just as extraordinary as the character the movie depicts.

Royalty does have it's priveleges but this movie doesn't leave any room as to why the French revolution took place. It's well done as to opulence, decandence and how some might live. It's done so well the mind can't take it in
