The Hidden Fortress (1958)
Member Rating:
Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress (original Japanese title: Kakushi Toride No San Akunin) stars Minoru Chiaki and Kamatari Fujiwara as a pair of misfit soldiers. Running from the enemy after a disastrous defeat, the two soldiers fall in with general Toshiro Mifune, who is in search of a huge cache of gold. Mifune is also desirous of freeing princess-in-exile Misa Uehara from the clutches of the evil victorious army. Several large and small battles ensue before Mifune can realize his goal. If the plot of Hidden Fortress sounds vaguely familiar to you, try this exercise: substitute two robots for Chiaki and Fujiwara, Mark Hamill for Mifune, and Carrie Fisher for Uehara. George Lucas himself admitted that Hidden Fortress was a principal inspiration for his Star Wars saga; stretching the point farther, both Hidden Fortress and Star Wars had their roots in John Ford's The Searchers. Originally released in a 137-minute form, The Hidden Fortress was sliced to ribbons by its American distributors, and years later received extensive restoration. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie is excellent, and it is indeed suitable for watching with children. Kurosawa's camera work holds up well even 50 years later and the story pacing is just right for developing suspense. Like Star Wars, the characters are archetypes rather than individuals portrayed in a realistic style. Not as good as Seven Samurai, but an excellent and very enjoyable movie.

This movie is the most amazing one of Kurosawa. I know japanese so the humor in the beginning loses a bit in translation but for those who understand Japanese, it is very funny. Toshiro Mifune is as amazing as ever. Beautiful direction, great visuals and camera work. All the characters remain deeeply etched in your mind long after watching it. Worth watching twice.

This movie definitely ranks as one of my favorite movies from Japan's greatest director, Akira Kurosawa. George Lucas sites this film as one of his inspirations for Star Wars. The two main characters in Hidden Fortress remind me of C-3PO and R2D2. There is also a search for a missing Princess in this movie, just like there was a search for Princess Lea in the original Star Wars. This movie is awesome. From the start of the film, the viewer is already drawn in. There is never a dull moment. Akira Kurosawa has a unique way of telling a story unlike any directors nowadays. Great framing and great composition in his shots. This movie will definitely stand the test of time; absolutely timeless.
