Hell to Eternity (1960)

Hell to Eternity (1960)
Member Rating:
This standard wartime drama is divided into three chronological segments and is based on the experiences of the real Guy Gabaldon (played as an adult by Jeffrey Hunter, and as a boy by Richard Eyer). In the first segment, Guy is a homeless waif without many prospects when he is adopted by a Japanese-American family. He grows up just in time to be drafted into battle in World War II -- the bombing of Pearl Harbor has a particularly devastating effect on his family and their friends. After a wild last fling with two buddies (David Janssen and Vic Damone) and some women, Guy heads off to war where he distinguishes himself because of his fluency in Japanese. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

It's about time this unknown classic has come to DVD! This little gem takes me back to my youth...I must have watched it 50 times on T.V....Violent and gritty for the time it was made, this is a gut-wrenching true story that doesn't try to hide the difficulties of Japanese-Americans during WWII. It's poignant without preaching. Interestingly, the REAL Guy Gabaldon was Hispanic. The producers were hesitant to portray him as a Hispanic, brought in "all-American" hunk Jeff Hunter instead. David Jansen is great as his buddy and Vic Damone is there as a diversion (he was a moderatly successful crooner at the time)..Watch for "Mr. Sulu" George Takai in an early role.
