Hell High (1987)

Hell High (1987)
Member Rating:
This routine slasher-thriller deviates slightly from the standard formula by way of a fairly intelligent script which explores the murderer's motivation in far more detail than other films of the subgenre. The central character is high-school science teacher Ms. Storm (Maureen Mooney), a mild-mannered woman plagued by barely-repressed psychological traumas, who finally snaps after falling victim to a sadistic prank perpetrated by one of her students. Believed dead, Storm comes after the pranksters with homicidal intent. Though Mooney's well-portrayed transformation from victim to murderer provides an interesting role-reversal against slasher convention, the story still falters in the overall execution, bogged down considerably by some lackluster performances and very little actual suspense. Still, it's considerably better than Demented, an earlier, wholly unsubtle treatment of the same theme. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

When you combine a semi-decent writer with a semi-decent-director and a semi-decent cast you sometimes get a semi-decent movie as did the people who made the semi-decently titled "Hell High". If that's the best title they good come up with you can probably guess the quality of this movie. It's a 80's cheesy "slasher" movie with very little slashing, instead they thought they were focusing on a more interesting plot. That means a long and boring exposition at the beginning that they try to keep interesting by flashing a few semi-decent breasts at you. It really doesn't help. Over all it's not a bad effort. I gave it three stars only because you can't give 2.75. You won't waste your time completely watching this, and you may semi-like it like I did. Put this at the bottom of your queue.

Not a bad little revenge flick. I'm sure we've all seen better, but if you like that kind of stuff then it's worth a rent. They messed up the transfer on this DVD - when there is a layer change you miss about 2 minutes of the movie. It gets filed under "unreferenced material", but luckily it's nothing too important. It's a scene that basically explains why the other High School kids start chasing one of the lead role actors.
