Anne of the Thousand Days is the belated film adaptation of Maxwell Anderson's 1948 stage play. The story concentrates on the romance between Britain's King Henry VIII (Richard Burton) and his ill-fated second wife Anne Boleyn (Genevieve Bujold). After holding out for marriage rather than an illegitimate union, Anne marries Henry after he sheds himself of Katherine of Aragon -- causing a rift between the Crown and the Church in the process. Anne's inability to produce a male heir leads Henry to look about for other suitable mates. Henry's sinister right-hand man Cromwell (John Colicos) arranges for Anne to be condemned on a charge of adultery. She is beheaded, while Henry disconsolately sits in Windsor Castle, regretting this callous example of political expediency. Richard Burton is ideally cast in Anne of the Thousand Days, but it is Genevieve Bujold who delivers the best, most complex performance in the film. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I saw this movie a long time ago. It's better than I remember it. Richard Burton and Genevieve Bujold are excellent. Anthony Quayle and John Colicos as Wolsey and Cromwell are also excellent. The costumes stand out as very authentic. The direction and script are well done. Thousand Days won many awards and it shows. It's hard to believe this film was made in 1969. Yet, Thousand Days was far better than the newest "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" (2007). It's hard to believe Blockbuster does not rent this DVD, even though you can purchase it from Amazon. I sent a request to BB but they haven't made this DVD available. I discovered this film at my library and checked out the VHS tape. I would like to see the DVD at its higher resolution and quality. I would also like to see any Bonus Features, such as a commentary track. If you want to see Richard Burton at his best and Genevieve Bujold at her most radiant, find and rent this film.

I see this movie every 5 or 10 years since 1969 and still enjoyed watching Richard Burton and Ms Bujold plus the costumes are exquisite for the period. A must see for historical purposes and an outstanding cast. I love Richard Burton in everything, one of my faves.

Historically inaccurate...and making Henry VIII's character as if he MINDED killing all those people made me roll my eyes heavenward more than once. For a better interpretation of the Tudors, I heartily recommend "The Tudors" over this in a heartbeat.
