Hamlet (1990)
Member Rating:
Franco Zeffirelli directs his third Shakespeare adaptation (after Romeo and Juliet and Otello) with this film version of the tragedy Hamlet. The titular prince of Denmark (Mel Gibson), returns home to his family's castle of Elsinore after years of attending school in Germany to find out his father has died and his uncle Claudius (Alan Bates) is the new king. To make matters worse, Claudius has married Hamlet's mother, Queen Gertrude (Glenn Close), whom he has unusually strong feelings for. Hamlet is visited by his father's ghost (Paul Scofield), who asks him to seek revenge for his murder. In order to find out who the real killer is, Hamlet stages a theatrical scene resembling his father's death. Claudius is upset by the production and leaves to arrange for Hamlet's murder. In the ensuing confusion, Hamlet accidentally kills Polonious (Ian Holm) instead of Claudius; Hamlet's lover, Ophelia (Helena Bonham Carter), goes mad and commits suicide; and eventually Hamlet and Claudius both meet their fate. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

This version of William ShakespearÂ’s Hamlet is by far the finest ever made. I have to admit I would have never thought to cast Mel Gibson as Hamlet. In fact, after some reflection they need not make any more versions, THIS ONE IS PERFECT. It was just not Gibson that made this movie work so well, it was the costumes, the sets, and the complete cast did an incredible job in making this film. I rented this film do to the fact that I like Zeffirelli films. He is a master when it comes to serious work. Othelo, La Traviata , and Jesus of Nazareth to name a few. I was just so pleasantly surprise with this movie.

Zefferelli's `Hamlet' hits the mark it aimed for: to present Shakespeare's play, in trimmed down form, in a manner accessible to the multitude. I found Gibson's Hamlet engaging (though I agree with the former reviewer that the mother-love goes too far) and, overall, enjoyed the rest of the cast. My major complaint about the film, however, is that it is simply too clipped and many of the best passages chopped to single lines. I was hoping a `complete version' of this production would someday be released but found, recently, that this is it. Worth seeing for Gibson's performance(and I hate Gibson) but will annoy `Hamlet' purists.

Mel Gibson is an amazing Hamlet, and Zeffirelli sets a great story that is beautifully shot. I'd only prefer to see the film structured in a way to focus more on Hamlet's inner turmoil. Shakespeare's play is clipped to push straight through the story - and although this is a grand accomplishment, I'd love to see Gibson portray the dark melancholy of Hamlet as its own story.
