Gung Ho! (1943)

Gung Ho! (1943)
Member Rating:
Accepted in 1943 as standard wartime propaganda, Gung Ho can be seen today as an outrageous exercise in raging machismo. Randolph Scott plays Thorwald, a marine colonel assigned to assemble a crack squadron of fearless jungle fighters for the all-important raid on Japanese-held Makim Island (which in real life was recaptured only a few weeks before the film's release). Thorwald seems determine to select the dregs of the earth for this mission: most of his squadron is comprised of misfits, barroom brawlers, borderline psychos and outright murderers. It is suggested that these sociopaths are the only men truly qualified for the mission at hand, and by film's end the squadron members-living and dead-are lauded as true-blue patriots. Once one gets past the questionable premise, Gung Ho is a fairly exciting WWII melodrama, with a particularly thrilling climax. The film is currently available in its original form and in a computer-colorized version. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Gung Ho! is a short World War II propaganda film. The disc I received was the original black and white version. I have heard that the movie has been colorized. The plot centers around the formation of the Marine Raider Battalions, their training and finally the raid on Makin Island. Each actor gets a few minutes of screen time to establish his personality and character before the big raid. There is much stock footage of Marines in training. There are a lot of speeches and voice over commentaries about “killings Japs”. There are even scenes of the wreckage in Pearl Harbor as the men are transferred to Hawaii from San Diego for additional training. I thought the battle was creditable. It was one of the first movies to show the actual hand to hand combat that was taking place in the Pacific. The quality of the DVD is very poor. This film should have been restored before being released as a DVD.

I wish I knew what this film was about. I have ordered it twice now and recieved instead a moden Michael Keyton movie with the same title (but in a wrapper for the 1943 movie). I wish a certain company (who's name you can not use in a review) would get their filing straight. Good luck!
