Unbowed (1999)

Unbowed (1999)
Member Rating:
Nanci Rossov directs this cross-cultural drama about captured Native Americans enrolled in a turn of the century "Negro" college. The film opens with Richard (Chuma Hunter-Gault) and Cleola (Tembi Locke) announcing their engagement. Though the college prides itself on its integrationist philosophy, the sharp-witted Cleola soon chafes under Richard's and the school's patronizing attitudes toward women. Meanwhile, three Lakota braves are accepted into the school at the behest of a U.S. Army officer who wants to prove that Indians can function in mainstream culture. The trio's reluctance to participate is more and more pronounced as their upwardly mobile Black classmates antagonize them with racial asides. Unbowed won Best Feature at the 1999 American Indian Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Truly beautiful and touching story about romance between Lakota Indian Chief Waka Mani (Jay Tavare) and black girl Cleola (Tambi Locke). Would see the movie over and over again.

Jay Tavare is a multi-talented American Indian actor who plays the rebellious Chief Waka Mani and is excellent in his portrayal of a Lakota Chief who falls in love with Cleola (played by Tembi Locke) who is a "Negro" student. He is strikingly handsome, witty and charming and was perfectly chosen by Nanci Rossov (Director) to play this leading role. It is also my understanding that that some of the shots were done in only 1-2 takes and under extreme (freezing) weather conditions. This movie is beautifully interpreted and based on a true story about Screenwriter Mildred Inez Lewis' ancestors. I highly recommend this movie! (CAUTION: There is a very touching and intimate love scene, which in my opinion it is not suitable for very young kids). MATURE EYES ONLY!
