The Crossing (1999)

The Crossing (1999)
Member Rating:
Adapted by screenwriter Howard Fast from his own fact-based novel, this historical drama tells the story of one of the most unexpected triumphs of the American Revolutionary War. In December 1776, the armies of General George Washington (Jeff Daniels) are near the point of collapse; short on money and supplies, ravaged by disease, their numbers thinned by desertion, and freezing in summer uniforms in the midst of a brutal winter, it seems all but impossible that the Colonial Army can hold out much longer against the British Army and their allied German Hessian forces. With imminent defeat a clear possibility, Washington and his troops organize for an audacious surprise attack against the British soldiers on Christmas Day, hinging on the crossing of the freezing Delaware River in the middle of a storm. Co-starring Roger Rees, The Crossing was produced for broadcast by the Arts and Entertainment cable television network. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Our family loved this. We are history buffs and enjoyed this depiction of Washington crossing the Delaware in a last ditch effort to save the day and preserve what was written in the Declaration of Independence only six months earlier. We have a 10-year old son who loves history too and we all enjoyed this part movie/part documentary.

A terrific history lesson. I think our children need to see this instead of so many other things they are being taught in school. A very good movie. If you missed it on television, don't miss it here.

I expected a much more passionate performance from all actorsin this flick, and feel it does not do justice to the remarkable exploits of our Continental Army in crossing the Deleware. Also, Washington seems far to casual and familiar to his men--acted and spoke like a private in the army, instead of the commanding general. Perhaps this movie is more a product of the way people wish things were, rather than what historians have told us???
