An awesome introduction to the world of Thai ghost stories, much more so than Bangkok Haunted or Lhorn which are both mildly entertaining but nearly devoid of any true cultural significance (save Lhorn's tale of the 'paup') - not to mention their shared lack of scares. "Nang Nak" or Miss Nak translated to English is a brilliantly filmed atmospheric tale of love that goes well beyond this mortal world. I personally was entranced by the film, and even though it's not terrifying, there are enough chills to be had if one gives themselves over to the story. Filmed many times before, but never with the grace and power brought by director Nonzee Nimbutr, Nang Nak tells a famous Thai cautionary tale set in the 1860's. In my opinion Nang Nak scores very high marks across the board for Cinematography, Story, Cast and even in the Chills department. Just about anyone interested in Asian cinema or folklore should benefit by taking in Nang Nak.

Despite the DVD cover claiming this is a Thai tale of horror, it's more a romantic tragedy with supernatural elements. The acting was excellent, the scenery looked authentic and the special effects were unexpected and well done. The final scene is sure to generate an emotional response from the viewer. The picture quality was very dark, so you may have to increase your TV's brightness. The audio defaults to stereo. As for extras, there's a text based "About the Director" filmography. Recommended.

This is a very good movie. The movie is not only about ghost haunting but it shows many links between the livings and the deaths: love, loyalty, hate, karma, etc. Being death is not over...the more attached to the world of the livings the harder for the spirit of the deaths to leave...or to "crossover". It's a beautifull movie which contains nice scenery, coherent story lines...and, most importantly, valuable philosophical teachings. We may think that the story is more fictitious but think again!
