During a pit-stop for repairs, the crew of the Enterprise is startled by a message on the main computer indicating an oncoming disaster. Only after ordering the evacuation of the vessel does Captain Picard discover that the computer was tampered with by aliens, who promptly steal the Enterprise and blast off for their own world, the dying planet Bynarus. A subplot involving Riker's romance with a woman he's met during a Holodeck-engendered trip to 1958 New Orleans unexpectedly figures into the main storyline.
