If anyone's reading this who loved "The Last Station," the recent hit film about the Tolstoy marriage, I have another great movie for you! In "The Cherry Orchard" a Russian extended family wonders how they can hold onto their cherished country home and legendary orchard, Takes place in the unsettled period before the Russian Revolution. Features stellar actors Charlotte Rampling and Alan Bates, plus a topnotch supporting cast.

6/11 Anton Chekhov was a great Russian writer, who created this play about the pathos within an extended family of Russian aristocrats, and their desire to preserve the 54 Hectare family estate (with renowned Cherry Orchard) in the face of bankruptcy. It is a classic comment on the different Russian views in the era, preserve things of traditional value or chop them down to make way for the new. (pave paradise to put up a parking lot) In the end, everyone is so self obsessed with their own success or failure that they leave what they value most behind. Serious sound problem with the DVD, hard to hear and no subtitles for the deaf like me. Great acting, superb dialogue, very young Gerald Butler. But truthfully not an easy watch, slow, better designed for the stage. Difficult for an audience a century removed from the events and ideology of the time.
