Directed by Atom Egoyan, Felicia's Journey is a low-key psychological thriller about the relationship between a lovesick young woman and an older man with an ugly secret. Felicia (Elaine Cassidy) has lived all of her life in a small village in rural Ireland. She has fallen in love with a boy named Johnny (Peter McDonald), so when Johnny unexpectedly travels to England in search of a job, Felicia wants to follow him -- especially since she's pregnant, a fact that she's keeping secret from her family, as well as Johnny. However, Johnny's family refuses to give her his address, so she leaves for Birmingham with only a sketchy idea of his whereabouts. Shortly after arriving, Felicia encounters Joseph Ambrose Hilditch (Bob Hoskins), the meticulous manager of a catering concern. She needs a place to stay and he recommends a good bed-and-breakfast. They soon become friendly, but Hilditch is more than just a mildly eccentric middle-aged man with a taste for French cuisine: he's had a long history of using and abusing homeless women, and Felicia looks like she's doomed to be the next victim. Based on a novel by William Trevor, Felicia's Journey was shown in competition at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Bob Hoskins gives a superb performance in this movie... the best I have seen him give. I think this is a beautiful film... it is shot wonderfully, directed adequately, and the cast is brilliant. If you like psychological thrillers that hit you when you least expect it, and not in a gory way--this is the film for you. The soundtrack is good, too. Haunting and stays with you. I love the attention to detail and the scenery.

This is a very good psychological drama. Filmed with dark greens, wet and cool colors which adds to the feel of danger. The lead Bob Hoskins gives one of his best performances. Also an excellent performance by Elaine Cassidy as Felicia who pays a sweet bewildered pregnant girl trying to find her lover a boy name johnny who left Ireland to work in England.Of course he doesn't write so she goes looking for him. Flash backs of johnnys mother explains a lot. When she get to England she run into Ambrose Hilditch(Hoskins) who has a need to help young girls in need of help and friendship,From there you get the picture. There is no over the top gore in this film but its a story of two people escaping from their past. In Hoskins case (his smothering mother) helps Explains his need of killing and abusing women. Felicia (Her father who thinks her child would be traider to Ireland because her lover went to England to join the British army ) The ending has shades of a Hitchcock movie.
