Chutney Popcorn (1999)
Member Rating:
The push and pull of familial bonds and clashing cultures sets the stage for the comic drama Chutney Popcorn. Renna (Nisha Ganatra) is a young woman of Indian descent living in New York, where she works as both a photographer and a body artist who creates henna tattoos. Renna is also a lesbian, which does not please her mother, Meenu (Madhur Jaffrey), who prefers to dote on her more traditionally minded (and happily married) daughter Sarita (Sakina Jeffrey). One day, Renna gets some bad news from Sarita: While she and her husband have been trying to have a baby, her doctor has informed that her she is infertile and will never bear a child of her own. Renna volunteers to serve as surrogate mother for Sarita; she wants to help her sister and hopes this will smooth some of the rough spots in her relationship with her mother. But Renna starts to have second thoughts, as her lover Lisa (Jill Hennessy) feels left out of the loop, and Meenu thinks both Renna and Sarita are making a mistake. Nisha Ganatra co-wrote and directed Chutney Popcorn and also plays Renna; the film was enthusiastically received in its screening at the 1999 Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

ok i thought this was going to be good.. well its not ... despite what others reviewed on here.. it wasnt really a lesbian movie.. i mean it was a indian girl getting pregnat for her sister then i dunno even know where it was going... cuz it never said who kept the baby.. it was just werid.. slow.. and not to mention the actors were not even good looking.. there was only one cute girl on there.. and its not funny despite what people said.. i didnt find one funny scene.... just save ur self some time and rent something more interesting... cuz this movie was bad with a capital B!

I just wanted to see Jill Hennessy to tell u the truth...If she were not in it I would not have rented it. I thought the movie was ok...and like Chrisitna R. I felt the ending kinda left you hanging. The storyline however was interesting. I could see how all the main characters would react the way they did in a situation like this.

I selected this movie after having seen a couple outstanding performances by Jill Hennessy, but I could not finish this one, a rare occurrence for me. I found a couple early scenes marked by self-effacement, almost self-hatred. I am sorry for this, because I have followed this kind of premise for decades with some care and great interest. and was surprised and dismayed by my reaction to this one. I hope other viewers will not avoid the movie because of my reaction, for it is important we all think for ourselves.
