The Puppetmaster (1993)

The Puppetmaster (1993)
Member Rating:
This Hou Hsiao Hsien masterpiece is a portrait of the childhood and adolescence of octogenarian Taiwanese puppet master and actor Li T'ien-lu, who narrates the film both off-screen and on-screen. In this second installment of a trilogy on Taiwanese life in the 20th century (City of Sadness is the first and Good Men, Good Women is the third), Li's development as an artist and husband plays out between 1908 and 1945 under the heavy hand of Japanese rule, paralleling the development of Taiwan's own political consciousness. The movie deftly shifts from a dramatization of Li's life, to Li speaking directly to the camera about his experiences, to his puppet performances in a semi-documentary style that recalls The Thin Blue Line (1988). Here, as in most of his films, Hou uses long takes and off-screen space to create a complex, richly layered meditation on personal, artistic, and national aspirations. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Donald A. is far more concerned with convincing you he's smart than with giving you an honest review. This movie is very slow and by American standards boring. That said, it's worth seeing if you can accept and appreciate typical eastern storytelling which differs a great deal from western. There is a lot that is left to the imagination and it's up to the reader or viewer to fill in the blanks or just accept it for what it is. It reminds me of viewing modern art when I'm not sure what the artist intended but I like it anyway and I'm not sure why. One thing is for sure, being smart has nothing to do with whether or not you'll like this movie.

This movie is slow as molasses. Even though the subtitle was OK, there doesn't seem to be a clear way to understand the plot. I am quite shocked someone rated this a 4. I must be missing something big time. This movie offered no value to me.
