Porgy and Bess (1993)
Member Rating:
Trevor Nunn's acclaimed 1993 production of Dubose Heyward and Ira Gershwin's classic fable of the tragic love affair between crippled Porgy (Willard White) and beautiful but troubled Bess (Cynthia Haymon) was widely acclaimed as one of the definitive stagings of one of America's best-known operas. Nunn restaged his production for a television adaptation commissioned by the BBC, and this video captures the impressive results. Gregg Baker and Damon Evans highlight the supporting cast, and the London Philharmonic (under the direction of Simon Rattle) provide the musical accompaniment. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

As a child, I had seen the Sidney Portier/Sammy Davis version on television. That was what I thought I'd ordered here. OOPS! But I was NOT disappointed! The music, the acting, the sets and costumes were fantastic. And what a beautiful story! I wanted my daughters to enjoy it too, so I turned on the subtitles to make it easier for them to follow. (They left the room after 15 minutes anyway. This generation expects constant action and comedy.) But the subtitles were very helpful for me too. Without them, you might have trouble with some of the dialog.

I had been looking for the 1993 version of Porgy and Bess for a long time, and I was so happy to find out that BlockBuster had it available for rent. I had seen and enjoyed the 1959 version of Porgy and Bess several times many years ago, but I like this version more. I enjoyed the musical and vocal renditions of the 1993 version more.

I suppose I was spoiled by the 1959 movie with Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, and Sammy Davis, Jr...which was a marvel...but I found this version of Gershwin's incredible opera rather disappointing. The voices were all excellent, but the acting lacked luster; I especially found Willard White's "Porgy" to be two dimensional (and a bit too belligerent). Perhaps the production suffered from the overlay of 21st century values...an uncomfortable mix of late 20th century political correctness and early 20th century stereotyped characterizations lurked around the edges. While the 1959 movie had other voices dubbed into some of the major roles, the acting was better, and the story and characters were more engaging. I wish that movie were available on DVD!
