Member Rating:
Action and comedy are served in equal portions in this Australian crime thriller. Jimmy (Heath Ledger) is a 19-year-old living in Sydney who is somehow asked to run an errand for local underworld kingpin Pando (Bryan Brown). Before Jimmy knows what's happened, he owes Pando $10,000, and finds the gangster's muscle men are out for his blood. Jimmy attempts to stage a bank robbery to recover the loot, with disastrous results; when he has a spare moment, he tries to win the heart of Alex (Rose Byrne), a pretty girl from the country. This slam-bang entertainment was an uncharacteristic entry in the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, where it received its U.S. premiere. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Wow. I rented this expecting very little, and was amazed at how fun it is. Done in the wake of "Pulp Fiction," it has an interconnected story that somehow remains warm and fuzzy amidst the carnage. Quirky and entertaining, it's well worth your time.

I'm not sure why the member rating was at 2 stars when the only two reviews gave this 4+ stars. Anyway, my own rating echoes these others...4.5 stars. This was quite a surprise and I found myself thouroughly enthralled during the entire movie; it's fast paced and exciting with many twists and turns. The only reason I gave this 4.5 instead of 5 stars was because I thought the wrap-up between the protagonist and his girlfriend could've been more unique, like the rest of the movie; it seems like this one part was rushed. Otherwise...extremely well-done and entertaining...one of my favorite movies.

Funny and very clever. It's the classic theme of novice crooks mixing up with bungling gangsters set in a sunny Sydney, Australia summer. It's got all of the white trashy dressed characters going about their business of petty crimes and larceny with plenty of confusion, misdirected violence, and various other mishaps. A love story balances it all out. Very satisfying entertainment. Great visuals and wonderfully acted by the entire cast. Another way to appreciate Heath Ledger's acting range and fine legacy. (Not for kids because of violence and language.)
