David Veloz made his directorial debut with this drama adapted from the autobiography of comedy writer Jerry Stahl (Ben Stiller), whose $6000-a-week heroin habit had him taking his infant daughter along on his drug runs and doing smack during TV script conferences. Departing detox, Stahl explores memories with survivor Kitty (Maria Bello), who listens patiently to Stahl's flashback. Other women in Stahl's life are his British wife Sandra (Elizabeth Hurley) and his agent Vola (Lourdes Benedicto). For the TV series "Mr. Chompers" (inspired by ALF), Stahl meets with sitcom exec Craig Ziffer (Fred Willard) and puppeteer Allen (Charles Fleischer). For freaky freebasing, Stahl hangs with mumbler Nicky (Owen Wilson) and druggie Gus (Peter Greene). Stahl himself can be seen in a cameo as the methadone clinic doctor. Shown at the 1998 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

I'm a huge Ben Stiller fan, so I felt I should see this movie ... Didn't care for the plot or organization of the story. I feel it would have been better as something other then a dark comedy and with someone other then Stiller in the Stahl role.

THis movie had so much potential. Great book. Great actors. But it fails. The best and funniest parts of the book are watered down or changed to the point of stupidity. B a stards dropped the ball on this one.

First things first: Maria Bello is gorgeous, in a girl-next-door kind of way. Back to the movie: Stiller did not pull off this dramatic role because he is aware of himself and the camera pointed at him. He doesn't look at the camera, he simply behaves like someone is watching him (see Carell, Carrey). He does attempt to perform as a heroin addict but in some cases over-acts and looks funny doing it. Bello, Hurley, Garafalo, and even Wilson do fine jobs with the material given them. But the lead part should have been given to someone else. Great practice for Stiller if he even chooses to take acting seriously. PS: Do I really need to warn you that it's not a kids movie?
