The Flying Tigers (1942)

The Flying Tigers (1942)
Member Rating:
The Flying Tigers were a group of American volunteer aviators, flying against the Japanese on behalf of General Claire Chennault and Chinese leader Chiang Kai-Shek in the months just prior to World War II. John Wayne is the most responsible of the bunch, and John Carroll the least. It's bad enough that Carroll tries to beat Wayne's time with pretty Red Cross nurse Anna Lee; but when Carroll's negligence results in the death of veteran-flyer Paul Kelly, the man becomes a pariah to the rest of the pilots. Unable to serve in World War II due to health reasons, John Wayne spent the duration licking the Japanese and the Germans in front of a Republic Studios process screen. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Very entertaining & enjoyable film. Not nearly the special efffects of today's blood & guts war films, which was actually refreshing to me. Of course John Wayne does a great job with his role. Enjoy...

I haven't read the history books, but I doubt this was an accurate portrayal of the real Flying Tigers. That being said, I found the movie enjoyable for what it was: a tale of individuals coming together and learning how to work together and learning to care to the small bits of good around them. It's a human drama movie. Judging it by the period it was made in (the early 1940's), it came off reasonably well. Judging it by today's standards (CGI, high action, etc) it wouldn't stack up so well.
