Member Rating:
This Danish comedy drama won the Jury Prize at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. It opens in rural Denmark as family members assemble for the 60th birthday celebration of patriarch Helge (Henning Moritzen). At the family estate are Helge's children: France-based restaurateur Christian (Ulrich Thomsen), whose twin sister killed herself; surviving sister Helene (Paprika Steen); and younger brother Michael (Thomas Bo Larsen), married with three children. At the birthday dinner, the bitter Christian stands to deliver a toast -- but instead makes a startling speech accusing Helge of sexual abuse involving both twins. Following principles outlined in 1995 by Danish fimmakers in their Dogme 95 proclamation, this film adheres to their manifesto guidelines of handheld cameras, direct sound, location filming, and the elimination of technical tricks. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Looks like it was shot with a camcorder. Excellent acting from most of actors ,Superb script, Will keep you under pressure the whole time. Will carry you through a night and you feel each and every moment of it. Why every other reviewer here says not comedy ? Is it suppose to be one ? Its a great movie not made for average Joe. Enjoy

wow. this movie really shows how the medium of digital technology can truly compliment a cinematic experience. would love to understand Danish so that you can watch the amazing performances instead of reading subtitles. there's a feature where you can get an english dub going...but that's really not to authentic. a family renunion to celebrate dad's 60th birthday. so you think. this thing unpeels through the movie and you never quite know who is telling the truth/lie and/or right/wrong. solid film.

This film is pretty much perfect. It epitomizes the ideals of Dogma 95, which stressed story and substance over artifice. No visual or audio effects, natural lighting. They just go in and make a movie based on the actors' abilities and the story's merits. And this one succeeds on so many levels. Story, characters, acting and style. Highly recommended.
