Moving drama about the tragedy of hunger among the under employed, especially how it effects children. But unlike Bell"s great earlier "American Heart", and "Streetwise", this very good film feels a bit soft, and just a bit preachy. Still bravely dark compared to most American films, but there is never a question of the film"s agenda. That is partly the subject, but it effects everything; the lighting, the music, even the supporting cast (producer Jeff Bridges appears as a rich doctor, and there is something distracting about seeing him in a cameo in a film starring his brother). Beau Bridges does his usual very solid job as the father, likable and human if headstrong and too prideful to get the help his family needs. I just felt a tad manipulated, if in a good cause. In the end, though, the importance of the story, and the strength of the performances win out, and this is still very much a film worth seeing.

This movie is one that should be watched in schools in order to teach principles of work. I think this movie will motivate children to retrieve a higher education. You see the contrast of low education and higher education. A doctor and a laboror find what they have in common within their own families. It shows the struggles of holding a family together and of letting go of pride. It also shows the struggles that the children go through on both sides of the fence dividing wealth and poverty.

This is a good movie for those children whose parents are wealthy, or for the children who think that they are unhappy because they don't have enough video games or stylist clothes, etc. After watching this movie, they will appreciate and count their blessings. I can relate with this movie because at one point, I was a divorced parent who was a victim of the system that let the father off the hook to pay child support for years. Later, we started studying the New Testament and thru our faith in God, excepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior, repenting of our sins, we are saved. Now, we have everything we need that comes from God.
