This 145-minute Indian drama, with Bengali dialogue, looks at life and attitudes among the educated Calcutta middle-class. Newlyweds Romita and her husband Palash are attacked while shopping one evening. Palash receives a brutal beating, and Romita is almost abducted. Romita's screams for help are ignored by passers-by until the intervention of schoolteacher Jhinuk forces the attackers to leave. Hailed as a heroine in the press, Jhinuk gets thanks from Romita's family and makes an identification of the assailants, but her efforts to bring justice generates opposition from both her fiance and Romita's family. Shown at the 1998 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide
