Blood Guts Bullets & Octane (1998)

Blood Guts Bullets & Octane (1998)
Member Rating:
Sid (director Joe Carnahan) and Bob (Dan Leis) are two down-on-their-luck, very fast-talking used car salesmen with a lot full of lemons and a gaping hole in their finances, when, at their most vulnerable, they are offered a deal: Park a cherry Pontiac LeMans convertible for two days...and they get $250,000. The catch is, "don't look, don't touch." The trunk is rigged to explode if they try to open it, and a sniper awaits them if they attempt to run off with it. On top of that is a trail of bodies stretching from South America to the car's delivery. Living in the shadow of Dan Woo (Dan Harlan), the giant car dealer down the street for whom Sid and Bob used to work, the boys have little choice. Hilarity and the FBI ensue. In the '90s it's Quentin Tarantino's world, we just watch the footage. Like a low-rent Faust on too much caffeine, director Joe Carnahan, armed with his car, his friends, and less than $8000, has made an energetic, eager-to-please debut to serve as his calling card to Hollywood. ~ Ron Wells, Rovi

For those who do not know, Joe Carnahan is the director of the grizzly but great crime flick Smokin' Aces, this is his first film. On paper this film should be great but its not and I blame the execution. Instead of this complex and smooth suspense film you get basically the non-stop jabber of Clerks and the wanna be suedo tough guy image from Pulp Fiction, only at a far lesser degree. To be positive the film rests solely on the shoulders of its two smooth talking salesmen leads and for the most part they seem to have an Edward Norton American X-isq ability to spout their lines at machine gun fire rate. Unfortunatly that does little to bring this film out of the very boring catagory. I do not suggest.

If this was a Hollywood blockbuster budget movie it would be great. The script/story is very good and makes this movie well worth watching. The execution is good though I get the impression they just didn't have the money for perfect. The acting is good though not top star caliber. The quality of the picture/cinematography is good though not top notch. This movie is great and well worth watching though not as polished as major motion pictures and that's just fine with me.
