Tang Fu Yu Sheng Nu (1959)

Tang Fu Yu Sheng Nu (1959)
One of the first films out of Taiwan to compete at the Cannes Film Festival (1959), this period drama by director Tien Shen is set in 1895 during one of the several Sino-Japanese conflicts that plagued modern Chinese history. A brave young woman is wrongly maligned as a traitor by her cowardly brother-in-law, who points his finger at her in order to escape punishment himself. Her name would not be cleared until many decades later. While this story involves certain cultural and historical sensitivities that would be absent in a general audience, the drama itself might still benefit if it proceeded at a faster clip. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
