Wilde (1997)
Member Rating:
Literary genius, legendary wit, bon vivant, and gay martyr, Oscar Wilde was a man whose legend has grown to iconic proportions since his death at the beginning of the 20th century. Establishing Wilde (Stephen Fry) as a loving family man, complete with a wife (Jennifer Ehle) and two adorable sons, the film takes pains to portray him as a dignified genius who was as pained by what he considered his own sin -- his homosexuality -- as he was delighted by the sins of others. From his initial encounters with Robbie Ross (Michael Sheen), his first male lover, through his tragic affair with the beautiful and bratty Alfred Lord Douglas (a perfectly cast Jude Law), Wilde is seen as a conflicted fellow, warring with his own urges even as he dazzles everyone around him. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi

Stephen Fry's impersonation of Oscar Wilde in this biopic is almost flawless. He both looks & sounds like the Great Wit himself. Especially commendable is the inclusion of a part of Wilde's career frequently ignored: his domestic life, his beloved wife & sons. Jude Law turns in his usual brilliant performance as the petulant child-man Bosie, & the supporting cast of RADA-trained British stage actors gives the whole production tremendous solidity. A sad tale, feelingly told.

As a massive Fan of Wilde and his wit I absolutely enjoyed this movie, but Fry does in fact seem to concentrate more on the dark, depressive side of Wilde - the artist's joy of life is almost entirely absent. Jude Law is absolutely amazing, and so is the rest of the crew. Even Orlando Bloom's tiny role as a so called bum boy puts a content smile on your face..

Fry gives a valid interpretation of Sir Oscar's Wilde's life. The focus is not so much on his homosexuality as the desire we have to restrict one another. Wilde made a career of making fun of how hypocritical we are and exposing the rigid boundaries of propriety we impose upon one another. In essence, we imprison ourselves by being excessively judgmental. This theme was carried strongly through the film. The Wilde family and close circle of friends also exhibited how love itself can be liberating as well as dooming. The whole cast was well selected. You sympathize with the wife, protagonist, and Robbie. Jude Law made an excellent spoiled brat, and I was totally enthralled throughout. While the moving is perhaps a bit too depressing to watch over and over again, I definitely believe this is a must see!
