If you know the works of Stephen Sondheim, you know your viewing will not consist of entertaiment like Bye Bye Birdie or even My Fair Lady, and this is among his most challenging works. I'll admit it. The first time I watched it, I was bored. I knew Donna Murphy's acting was a thing of legend, but the show as I whole I was just kind of "eh". After watching the concert on TV starring Patti Lupone, I revisited this show, and was astounded at what I had missed. The pure, raw emotion. The loneliness of Fosca, yet the realness is simply breathtaking. I was haunted and continue to be by this story. I later had to do the same with Sunday in the Park With George. They were both shows I needed to watch several times to appreciate, but they now are the shows closest to my heart.

This is not a show filled with toe-tapping, showstopping moments. It's a character-driven tragi-romance that happens to be set to music. And what music! The acting, especially from Donna Murphy, is top-notch.
