Pretty Boy (1993)

This movie was o.k. it shows life on the streets for this boy. The dvd has had scenes cut from the vhs version, which I don't understand, and personally don't like cut versions, unrated ones at that. The ending is not what you would expect either. It just ends and leaves you hanging, wanting to know more.

I honestly didn't know what to expect from this film, and it surprised me. Hauntingly beautiful and disturbing at the same time, the acting far surpasses the actual story, which is just another runaway story. What young Christen Tafdrup does with the character of Nick, will beguile and amaze you, however. We see naive and almost child-like Nick move quickly from one disturbingly fast relationship to the next, gleaning something from each until, at the end, he has stepped into the realization that he is what he is, and is an adult. It's a film that needs the dialog, so if you're one of those who simply can't deal with foreign language films with subtitles, you want to pass this one up, I think. You have to be able to concentrate on the film, and read the subtitles, but if you do, it's an experience unlike most films these days, a true piece of art that will lend itself well to the "conversation after the movie."

A sympathetic look at a teen run away. But much is left to enuendo, supposition, etc. Good, but really not very original..
