Public Access (1993)
Member Rating:
Before making their Oscar-winning film The Usual Suspects, director Bryan Singer and writer Christopher McQuarrie made their first film -- this low-budget independent feature and Grand Jury Prize winner at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival. Public Access examines the power and dangers of mass media consumption upon a small-town community. Ron Marquette plays Whiley Pritcher, a stranger in the small community of Brewster, who lands a job as the host of a local public access call-in show. On his program he asks the simple question "What's wrong with Brewster?" and gets all manner of call-in complaints -- from discrimination at the school to political corruption at the town hall. Soon, Whiley becomes a local celebrity and an arbiter of public opinion. As his power grows, he makes a pact with Bob Hodges (Burt Williams), Brewster's mayor, and begins an affair with Rachel (Dina Brooks), the town librarian. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

The opening sequence is several minutes without any dialogue comprising set up shots of a small town fitting "middle America" stereotypes. It could have been set up with 30 seconds, but the filmmakers had too much footage they didn't want to cut. This is a good description of the film: slowly set up, lots of artistic camera angles, slowly followed through plot development. 45 minutes in, you don't have any idea where this film is going. If that's appealing, you'll love it; if that causes you to worry if it's going ANYWHERE at all, you'll give up.

Public Access is definitely an independent film, it even looks like it was shot on video, but hey... it's Public Acces! I loved the title at the beginning of the film, total public access. For a small budget I thought it was very well done. The film had me guessing about the main character the entire film, and left me guessing. I've heard it called anti-climatic, but that didn't bother me. If you are looking for a film that doesn't fit film formulas, and are willing to bring yourself to the film instead of insisting that the film entertain you, I think you will like this film.
