Mike Figgis' grim drama documents a romantic triangle of sorts involving prostitute Sera (Elisabeth Shue), failed Hollywood screenwriter Ben (Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage), and the constant flow of booze which he loves more dearly than life itself. Arriving in Las Vegas with the intention of drinking himself to death, Ben meets Sera, and they gradually begin falling for one another. From the outset, however, Ben warns Sera that no matter what, she can never ask him to quit drinking, a condition to which she grudgingly agrees. Wonderfully acted movie with Nicolas Cage and Elizabeth Shue. I was told this movie was depressing so I avoided it until now. But, it wasn't what I expected. The relationship between Cage and Shue was tender and forgiving.

As an aesthetic work, both Nicolas Cage and Elisabeth Shue had outstanding performance. I even enjoyed watching Cage here more than his latest ones. However, the story is very deep and sad. Don't watch it, if you're already in a bad mood.

I love Nicolas Cage but I didn't like him in this role. I just wanted to see him stop drinking and I wanted his friend to stop selling her body. I guess what they say is true misery loves company.
