The Devil's Playground (1976)
Member Rating:
Fred Schepsi wrote and directed this tense melodrama which takes place at a Roman Catholic boarding school. The film deals with the charged emotional tensions of a group of pubescent boys, who find their sexual urges stifled by the school's oppressive atmosphere. Depicting the chaste lifestyle of the religious functionaries, the burgeoning sexual desires of the young men are bottled up until they are ready to explode. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

This movie was way ahead of its time, candidly dealing with the struggles of priests (and those studying to be priests) to honor their vow of celibacy. While most films dealing with this subject would focus on a single character, this film has several generations, viewpoints, and personal struggles, all of which fit perfectly together in a coherent story. Add beautiful cinematography and a frankness virtually unseen in this era and you have a film that should have been considered pivotal, if not revolutionary, if its subject hadn't made so many people uncomfortable.

This is a lousy movie; rambling and senseless.
