It's H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) versus Jack the Ripper (David Warner) in the fanciful Time After Time -- and, per the film's title, the chase extends from the 19th century to the 20th. Wells has built a time machine in his cellar, which the Ripper uses as a means of escape. Both men find themselves in 20th century San Francisco, and, after a period of adjustment, they make themselves at home. The plot takes a dark turn when the Ripper, disappointed that Wells' dreams of a Utopian future have not come to fruition, resumes his murderous activities. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

While one could scoff at the fact that a movie that stemmed from the very tail-end of the 70's could not possibly have the special effects that a movie in this day and age boasts, I will honor it for what it truly appeared to be: A a unique and well-made time-travel movie. True, some of the time-travel scenes themselves are a bit outdated, but it does nothing to detract from the overall movie. McDowell is convincing as the brilliant inventor Wells, the man who made the time machine. Warner is good as the Ripper himself, though I suppose a character like his could afford a bit more insanity and intensity. Although, the very plot should attract you from the start. Steenburgen adds to the story as the teller in the future (1979 future) that Wells falls in love with. It really has all the classic elements of good movies: science-fiction, murder, suspense, and that persistent love. I couldn't think of an excuse not to watch this movie.

The real strength of this movie is that it is good on multiple levels. The director & writer Nicolas Meyer did a great job crafting this classy thriller. A testament to that is that it holds up well after 32 years. The central idea of Jack the Ripper being chased through time to the present by H.G. Wells is very interesting and made believable in this telling. David Warner as the Ripper is particularly excellent and Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenbergen make their on screen romance come to life. Finally, the music score adds a fantasy element moves the story along with great momentum to its inevitable climax.

Actually,this movie was pretty good,still better than the garbage their putting in theaters today.
