On the eve of her sister's wedding, suburban teenager Samantha (Molly Ringwald) suffers silently as her family forgets her birthday. Even worse, some total dork (Anthony Michael Hall) keeps propositioning her with sophomoric innuendo when she really craves romantic attention from high-school hunk Jake (Michael Schoeffling). Moving from Samantha's family home as it's invaded by outre relatives to a high-school dance where nothing seems to go her way, this bittersweet teen comedy traces the hopes and disappointments of not only Samantha, but also a host of incidental but memorable characters, from a hapless Japanese exchange student to a prom queen and a posse of barely pubescent nerds. I do like this movie, but agree that the PG rating is a little off. The language and the sexual innuendo is for more mature than 12 or 13. I kept reminding my girls watching it that the party scenes were there to show them what NOT to do in high school (next year) and at 16. I can see dropping a few words here and there for authenticity, but there was too much of the "language" that I'd prefer my kids not use as second nature. Still a good movie though...

This is an essential '80s Pop Classic for the ages. I'll never stop loving this movie because of Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall. The brat pack years were the BEST of the best times to be young and discovering life. This film is a great snapshot of what it was like being a teen (in the '80s) from several different angles with great humor as well as with deft sentimentality. What sets this movie apart (along with other John Hughes films) is the believeable characters and the actors who portray them. And, always with excellent music aptly fitting every scene. The movie takes you on a really fun journey and leaves a sense of satisfaction. Plenty to see and hear and laugh about. (Must also see: Pretty in Pink, Weird Science, and The Breakfast Club.)
