Member Rating:
Originally prepared for European release under the title Catchfire, Backtrack wasn't given a wide distribution until 1991, and then only to capitalize on the Oscar win of Silence of the Lambs star Jodie Foster. In Backtrack, Foster plays a youngish innocent who witnesses a mob hit. Professional assassin Dennis Hopper is contracted to silence Foster for keeps. Instead, he falls in love with her. Directed by star Hopper, Backtrack has some of the feel of his earlier, better Easy Rider: the cast is populated by such old Hopper chums as Dean Stockwell, Charlie Sheen, Joe Pesci, Bob Dylan, Vincent Price and Julie Adams; and, like Easy Rider, it looks as though the story was improvised during filming. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Why am I the first to review this movie? Everybody's in it: Joe Pesci, John Turturro, Charlie Sheen, Catherine Keener, and even Bob Dylan! Vincent Price makes one of his last screen appearances, and Dean Stockwell comes out of seclusion to play a mob lawyer. Dennis Hopper directs and tries to stretch a little out of his usual weird role. But best of all, there is a very sexy Jodie Foster (the nudity refers to her) in a movie that came out the same year as Little Man Tate and Silence of the Lambs. This is a suspense-action-thriller movie (not much mystery) with a surprise feel-good ending. Fun!

This is a great look at Jodie Foster, and an almost european look at america in 1989.

How did this movie get rated two stars? It's got lots of actors that you'll recognize including one of Tony Soprano's crew. Jodie was only 27 when it was made, Mr. Hopper in his early 50's. Lots of cliches and obvious product placement. Action and suspense and a pretty good storyline. Great entertainment.
