The Frisco Kid (1979)
Member Rating:
Robert Aldrich returns to the western-spoof genre he'd previously explored in Four for Texas with The Frisco Kid. Gene Wilder plays Polish rabbi Avram Belinsky, who intends to set up a congregation in San Francisco. Eminently unsuited for life in the Old West, poor Avram is victimized by everyone with whom he comes in contact. Salvation arrives in the unlikely form of taciturn bank robber Tommy (Harrison Ford). Incredibly, Tommy takes a liking to the feckless Avram, and together the two men embark on a series of seriocomic adventures. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

How can you not love Gene Wilder? And Ford here has not yet developed his film persona, though we see aspects of it in the film. Wilder's performance as an Orthodox rabbi trying to get from Poland to San Francisco made me laugh frequently and -- suprisingly -- made me cry a few times. He's optimistic and honest, gentle but firm. See if you don't tear up when Gene says, "You're my best friend" and Ford replies, "I never had a best friend before." Watch for a terrifric theological debate between the rabbi and an open-minded Indian chief, who takes such pleasure in peoples' joy. The film is uneven at times (just how long does the trip take them, anyway? and where do they go?), perhaps like this review. But check it out, and you might find yourself screaming "Oy Gevaaaaaaaaaalt" next time you jump off a cliff. . .

Although I'm not a huge fan of westerns, this one's really cute and fun; a must see if you love Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford.
