The year is 1997. Manhattan Island is now a heavily guarded maximum-security prison, where the scum of the earth have converged. When Air Force One crash-lands in Manhattan, the president (Donald Pleasence) is held hostage by its denizens. One-eyed mercenary Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is strong-armed into rescuing the chief executive. He is aided, not always willingly, by a tough gal (Adrienne Barbeau) and a manic cab driver (Ernest Borgnine). Escape from New York was followed by a sequel of sorts in 1996, Escape From L.A., again starring Kurt Russell. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Sure it's easy to pick on this film, such as casio keyboard music, bad lighting, corny characters, bad research on future devices (still using cassettes), etc.,etc. But what really makes this movie is Kurt Russell as, "don't call me Plissken, call me Snake". Also a lot of good one-liners and not just with Snake. It has memorable characters such as, Cabbie, Brain, and the tough villain "The Duke". And this movie has a great ending.

I rented this having never seen it, but in the mood for a horrible 80's sci-fi action movie (afficionados know the genre well ;) ), and boy did this puppy deliver! Not to be "enjoyed" by the faint of heart... Very 1 dimensional characters & plot, as well as dated "special effects".

It is hard putting into words how awesome this movie is even 30 years later! If it isn't the badass undertones from Russell, reminiscent of a Clint Eastwood movie, it's wondering who will screw Snake over next. If you like science fiction with an action/adventure twist, plus a hero who is chock full of badassery (if that's even a word). Then "Escape from New York" should be right up your alley! Don't forget to check out "Escape from L.A" if you like "Escape from New York."
